Beyond the Rowhouse

Beyond the Rowhouse reimagines residential life in Jersey City’s India Square, a neighborhood shaped by its South Asian community and the gradual adaptation of traditional rowhouses.
The project proposes a new housing model inspired by everyday spaces found in Indian architecture, such as shaded front platforms, verandas, and screened transitional spaces that encourage social interaction while providing privacy and protection from the climate. These elements are translated into porches, shared courtyards, flexible storefronts, and communal spaces, allowing the building to support both domestic and commercial life.

The result is housing that reflects the cultural identity of India Square while creating new opportunities for community, adaptability, and connection.
